The 2011 Nepal workshop, “Andean-Asian Mountains Global Knowledge Exchange On Glaciers, Glacial lakes, Water & Hazard Management,” was a mobile workshop held in the Mt. Everest region of Nepal in September 2011.

The workshop was based on global collaboration and exchange of experiences related to glacial lakes and hazards, water supply, and the human dimensions of climate change and adaptation. 35 scientists from 15 different countries spent 18 days trekking to and, in collaboration with local people, assessing the history and current apparent stability of Imja Lake. Imja, which was a glacier in the 1960s, is now a 1 km2 lake, containing more than 35 million m3 of water, and growing at 35m per year.

The field expedition was followed by a two-day follow-on conference, and a two-day 'writers workshop' where the priority research and action projects were identified and captured.

Significant media interest was achieved (>80 million hits on the blog and journalist articles generated), and participants were unanimous in their interest to establish a Global Glacial Lake Partnership program, with the objective of increasing dialogue and collaboration between scientists, practitioners, and policy makers in the areas of glacial lake studies, related water issues, and the participation of local people.

Conference proceedings are in a 235-page PDF book (27MB). View the complete table of contents and download the book here.
