Safety Measures for Dangerous Glacial Lakes in Cordillera Blanca, Peru

Flooding Chicon Gorge

This working draft of an upcoming technical report on "Safety Measures for Dangerous Glacial Lakes in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru" by César A. Portocarrero Rodríguez, is being offered to the HMGWP's participants in advance of the upcoming workshop in Peru. The 80-page PDF presents a history of glacial lake outburst floods in Peru, the steps taken to prevent or mitigate future GLOFs, the underlaying geology and glacial morphology, and lots of photos from case studies throughout Peru, but especially the Cordillera Blanca. He concludes with a suggested methodology developed by Peruvian scientists and engineers in response to the history of glacial lake problems from retreating equatorial glaciers.
